Here's to good times, and affordable prices: At the Royal Playa del Carmen, Jenae Williams, left, Laurie Kuchy, Adam Kuchy and Derek Armstrong toast with tequila…."The price was right," says handsome Derek, who booked 10 days at the company's neighboring Gran Porto Real Playa del Carmen, but then upgraded to the Royal — for $950 total. "Places in Jamaica were charging $1,700."

In Cancun, most hotels and resorts are offering packages and deals to boost occupancy rates that dropped as low as 20% in early May. The bargains seem to be having an effect: The occupancy rate for Cancun's hotel zone rose to 43% over Memorial Day weekend, but those numbers are still far from the 85% posted at the same time in 2008. "Our main concern is to bring back the airlines," says Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau. While several American carriers cut their capacity, large European tour operators such as Thomas Cook canceled all trips until this past week — leading Cancun to lose an estimated $20 million every five days for much of May, Almaguer says. Besides increasing airlift, the Cancun visitors bureau has been filming testimonials from visitors already in Mexico, hoping that word of mouth will entice last-minute summer bookings. Europeans have long booked holidays with little lead time; since the economic downturn last year, Americans and Canadians have adopted similar patterns, Almaguer says. "We expect the numbers to get higher by July," he says. It's the same story on the Riviera Maya, the 81-mile stretch of resorts and beach towns that start south of Cancun and end in Tulum. There, tourism officials have launched a website, holarivieramaya.com, and are using social media such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Flickr to get out word about deals at the area's 37,000 hotel rooms. Outside of the resorts, Playa del Carmen boasts a sophisticated nightlife scene, with swank Miami-style lounges, as well as the area's primary shopping district. The crowds along Quinta (Fifth) Avenue are decidedly slim, and even the most popular restaurants have empty tables. Recovery won't be instantaneous; current occupancy hovers around 27%, says Javier Aranda, general director of the Riviera Maya Destination Marketing Office. But this week, the first cruise ship returned to Cozumel, an island just off the Riviera Maya coast, bringing 2,446 passengers. Two more ships with 4,752 more passengers arrive next week; the three ships together are expected by bring in $580,000, Mexico's Minister of Tourism Rodolfo Elizondo said in a press release. By October, when cold weather in Canada triggers the Riviera Maya's lucrative winter season, Aranda hopes that tourism is close to normal. "It will be a process," he says. "But there are a lot of values here that they couldn't find in another destination." Lure of empty beaches A recent Friday flight into Mexico is uneventful, save for more empty seats, with few passengers wearing surgical masks. Arriving at the Cancun airport, visitors fill out a form detailing possible flu symptoms. Once past customs, a masked health worker holds up an infrared thermometer to scan foreheads for fever (the process is repeated leaving the country). The lobby at Le Meridien Cancun Resort & Spa is quiet, but a boisterous — albeit small — crowd gathers by the pool. They compare deals: one received a $100 resort credit and a free breakfast, another has a 20% spa discount. Most had booked within the past week. Sohel Momin, a doctor from Cummins, Ga., and his girlfriend, Madelin Prendes, a radio journalist in Miami, had looked into Anguilla for the holiday weekend but were swayed by Cancun's lower prices. For $1,100, the 35-year-olds received two airfares and four nights at the hotel, including a room upgrade.

Mexican artist Silvia Gruner undertook the in situ work; the motto coming from her video instalation, of the same name; it is a story of isolation and indivituality, of a beautiful swimmer who sets out to cross a pool but never reaches the other side; however, this pool has borders but the relief from the bright sun of Playa and the chill out music, truly isolate you in space. Away From You is at once thought provoking and true. Here, one storey up from the street life of Playa del Carmen, one is really away from everything. But not the party, the one in which everyone wants to be seen. Deseo Pool and lounge provide the most audacious piece of style around.

Since the Riviera Maya faces East, it is not known as a good place to witness a tropical sunset. But there´s still hope... Try these 4 tips for catching a gorgeous sunset.

Take a champagne sunset cruise aboard catamaran near Puerto Aventuras and watch the sun sink into the caribbean.
Walk to the point at the nort end of Playa del Carmen Cove, in back of Puerto Real hotel, and watch the sun go down next to El Faro lighthouse.
Take a day trip to Cozumel Island and stay for sunset, then take a late ferry back to the mainland. Since the town´s main beaches and town square face west, the sun sets over the ocean, just like in the postcards.
For the ultimate unobstructed sunset view, schedule a sundown skydie and look down, not up, at the setting sun.

The tropical beach backdrop is the main attraction of this picturesque, much-visited shore. Shortly after your arrival, you will understand why early Mayans picked this beautiful place to relax. There are really three different areas all referred to as Tulum only minutes away from each other, not close enough though to walk to and from.

Tulum Ruinas is the archaeological site where the Maya ruins of Tulum stand.Tulum is mostly known for its ruins, which strike an impressive image next to the sea, but were constructed during a time period of Maya culture that was waning. The site is notable for a small cenote (albeit dry during Jan 2007), beautiful beach below the ruin laden cliffs and some well preserved stellae in only one of its structures. After visiting other ruins in the area such as Coba, Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, Tulum's main claim is the sea-side setting. It is best visited on a clear, bright day or at sunrise. Bring your swimming suit.

Tulum Playa nests along the coastline that leads into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere [Ecological Reserve], the Caribbean white sandy beaches to the east, an impressive mangrove & wetland reserve to the south. Tulum Playa embraces many of the fancier, ecological, boutique and spa hotels, and it has a decent to excellent selection of restaurants and night spots. There are also a number of affordable beach front cabana-type lodging locations.

Tulum Pueblo is indeed a destination for shopping, great restaurants, a modest night life, booking tours, banking, shopping for food, local vegetables, fruits, cafes, and local flavor.

Yaxché : Maya Cuisine

Yaxché (pronounced jack - shay) is a restaurant with gourmet food that fully expresses the flavors of the Mayan culture. The menu here makes use of many native foods and spices to present a more elaborate regional cooking than the usual offerings at Yucatecan restaurants.

My favorite dishes:
Tikin Xic : A whole fish marinated in achiote and sour Orange with tomato, white onion and green pepper slices, wrapped and grilled in a banana leaf.

Poc Chuc : This wonderful dish made from char grilled pork marinated inn sour-Orange with black beans, purple onions, tomato and Maya spices.

Lime Soup: A delicious soup made with shredded chicken, bits of fried tortilla, and lime juice. Exquisite!

TIPS:

Try the special menu from 1:00pm to 5:00pm... Lobster & shrimp tacos are delicious + 2x1 on beers and coctails.
In high season reservation is recomended

Famously distinguished by its soft white sand and turquoise water, the Yucatan's Carebean coast stretches 236 miles from Can Cun all the way to Chetumal, at the border with Belize. the worlds second-longest reef system protects most of the shoreline. Where the reef breaks, you find good beaches in the gaps, such as Playa del Carmen, Xpu-Ha and Tulum. The northen half of the coast is now known as the Riviera Maya"; the southern half, the "Costa Maya". In between is the large Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve. Inland you'll find jungle, caverns cenotes (limestone wells that lead to an underwater river), and the better known ruins of the Maya.
